Library accepting food for fines

WATSONVILLE — Through Saturday, the Watsonville Public Library will be collecting food for fines.

For every can of food donated to Second Harvest Food Bank, $1 of overdue fines will be waived.

The program does not apply to lost items or other types of fines.

Scholarships available through Community Foundation

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Community Foundation Santa Cruz County has 10 academic scholarships available to students pursuing opportunities in higher education.

One online application is all that’s needed to apply for any or all of the scholarships for which the application is eligible.

Award amounts range from $750 to $2,000, with some available for multiple years. Some of the scholarships are tailored to students interested in sports, agriculture or from a particular area in the county, including Watsonville.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 2.

Dientes welcomes four new board members

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Dientes Community Dental Care announced the appointment of four new members to its Board of Directors: Marilyn Berta, Javier Carrillo, Michael Moore and Dr. Louis Stromberg.

Now retired, Berta served as a physician’s assistant at Santa Cruz Community Health Centers, and brings an understanding of the people Dientes serves.

As a health programs manager at the Central California Alliance for Health, Carrillo focuses on educating patients about how to maintain and achieve optimal health.

As product quality manager at Driscoll’s, Moore focuses on measuring and evaluating systems to better enable consistent excellence.

Stromberg, a dentist and endodontist, has established and grown dental practices in Southern California.

The four new members join the board as Dientes announces its new slate of officers: President Steve Moody, Vice President Camille Smith-Ballon, Treasurer Ronald Japinga and Secretary Alexandra Navarro.

Seymour center seeks volunteers

SANTA CRUZ — The Seymour Marine Discovery Center is recruiting volunteers.

A prospective volunteer information night is set for Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at 100 McAllister Way in Santa Cruz. There, prospective volunteers can drop-in to explore the Seymour Center, learn what it means to be a docent volunteer, and talk to current volunteers. The center will also be accepting applications at this event.

The Seymour Marine Center at Long Marine Lab is dedicated to educating people about the role scientific research plays in understanding and conserving the world’s oceans.
