CHP offering traffic safety class
APTOS — The California Highway Patrol is offering a traffic safety program for teenage drivers and their parents.
The Start Smart Program is aimed at helping future and newly licensed teenage drivers become aware of the responsibilities that accompany the privilege of being a licensed California driver. This program is designed as an educational tool for parents and teenagers in an effort to reduce the number of teenage injuries and deaths resulting from traffic collisions.
The Start Smart program also provides teens and parents with information on defensive driving, traffic laws in California, dynamics of traffic collisions, tips on avoiding traffic collisions, and DUI awareness.
Smart Start classes are free of charge.
The next class will be held Jan. 29 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Aptos Library, 7695 Soquel Drive.

Native Daughters of the Golden West offering scholarships
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Santa Cruz Parlor No. 26 of the Native Daughters of the Golden West is offering several $5,000 college scholarships.
To be eligible to apply, the student must be a graduate of a Santa Cruz County high school or a graduate of Cabrillo College during the 2017-2018 school year. The applicants must have an overall GPA of 3.5 and must have been accepted or anticipate being accepted to an accredited four-year college or university.
Additional eligibility requirements and application instructions are listed on the application forms. The forms have been sent to the public and private high schools in Santa Cruz County and to Cabrillo College. Interested students should request an application from the school counseling office.
All completed applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 28.

Board of Supervisors elects new chair
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors unanimously elected Supervisor Zach Friend as their new chair and Ryan Coonerty as vice-chair on Tuesday.
“I’m very honored to once again assume the chairmanship of the Board of Supervisors,” Friend said. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with the community and my colleagues on the board as we embark on new initiatives in Santa Cruz County throughout 2018.”
It is Friend’s second stint leading the board. He replaces Supervisor John Leopold, who served as chair during 2017.
