Dog training classes begin

WATSONVILLE — Classes by the Monterey Bay Dog Training Club, Inc. start Tuesday.

Class sessions are eight weeks long and are held at two locations. All levels of training are taught by professional trainers: puppy, beginning, intermediate and advanced.

The classes are held Tuesday nights at the Crosetti Building at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, 2601 East Lake Ave. in Watsonville, and Thursday nights at the Mid-County Senior Center, 829 Bay Ave. in Capitola.

Cost is $100 per eight-week session.

Photographer to present nature work

WATSONVILLE — Watsonville Wetlands Watch will present “The Ospreys of Harkins Slough” on Jan. 23 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Fitz Wetlands Educational Resource Center, 500 Harkins Slough Road in Watsonville.

Photographer Seraphina Landgrebe spent five months documenting the life of a pair of ospreys at Harkins Slough. In the presentation, Landgrebe will show the photos she took and talk about her experience observing and photographing the ospreys.

“It was a magical experience to photograph and document nature in action,” she said. “I created this photo journal to illustrate the beauty of nature and the grace of ospreys. Only through photography can one see the detailed beauty of their wings and feathers.”

Workshop covers parenting issues

CAPITOLA — Stepping Stones Triple P offers parenting support for families with children with special needs, such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome and other developmental delays. Stepping Stones Triple P Workshops are brief classes that provide quick tips for handling everyday parenting issues. 

The next workshop will be held at the  Soquel Union School District Board Room, 620 Monterey Ave. in Capitola, on Jan. 16 from 3-4:30 p.m.

The free workshop will cover parenting issues that often cause disagreements between partners; how to take care of your relationship with your partner and create a positive family life; and tools to help partners support each other and work as a team.

This Stepping Stones Triple P workshop is offered as part of the North Santa Cruz County SELPA Community Advisory Committee’s monthly meeting. No registration required. Light snacks provided. Child care will not be available at this event.

 The workshop will be presented by Gelacio Gonzalez, Triple P practitioner.

Roaring Camp offering rain forest excursions

FELTON — Roaring Camp Railroads is offering weekend excursions of the rain forest by rail starting Saturday and running through March 25.

Located in the Santa Cruz Mountains just a few miles from the ocean, the forest flourishes in moderate temperatures and a year-round water supply provided by frequent Pacific systems and dense fog.

As guests ride at branch level through the forest by steam train, a guest narrator will provide information about the eco-system of California redwood forests and the local area.

Rain forest weekend trains operate Saturdays and Sundays at 12:30 p.m.

Roaring Camp is located in Felton, six miles north of Santa Cruz.

County building counter extends hours

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — Starting Tuesday, the County of Santa Cruz Planning Department Building Counter will open at 7:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

The new hours are available so that contractors may pick up ready-to-issue permits. Over-the-counter permits that do not require Zoning staff review may be obtained during this extended time.

If Zoning review is required, the contractor will need to wait until 8 a.m. to sign up for that service.
