Ella’s at the Airport benefiting Pajaro Valley Climate Action

WATSONVILLE — On Wednesday, 15 percent of Ella’s at the Airport’s proceeds from the day will be donated to Regeneración – Pajaro Valley Climate Action.

Funds will support the organization’s community survey aimed at identifying how local residents are being affected by environmental changes and determining support for initiatives to reduce pollution and build a stronger community.

Ella’s at the Airport is located at 100 Aviation Way in Watsonville. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Youth-led art exhibit to debut

WATSONVILLE — Beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday to Feb. 28,  the United Way of Santa Cruz County, in partnership with Jovenes SANOS,  will be presenting a Youth Led Art Exhibit, promoting the artwork of Ann Soldo Elementary students. 

The free event takes place at the Watsonville Public Library, 275 Main St., Suite 100.

According to Jovenes SANOS, the community members of Watsonville face childhood obesity rates of 49.3 percent in comparison to 31 percent in the city of Santa Cruz. In the 2017 Community Assessment Project report, 40.7 percent of Santa Cruz County respondents do not have access to healthy fresh fruits and vegetables and 61 percent of respondents are overweight/obese.

Jovenes SANOS, a Watsonville youth-based advocacy and leadership group, is facilitating peer-to-peer nutrition education workshops at local elementary schools, Ann Soldo Elementary and Radcliff Elementary.

The Jovenes SANOS Youth Led Art Exhibit will provide a platform for youth to advocate and speak about health disparities through art.

Moreland Notre Dame hosting open house

WATSONVILLE — Moreland Notre Dame, a Transitional Kindergarten through eighth grade Catholic school in Watsonville, invites interested families to attend its annual open house on Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m.

Teachers, staff, and current students and parents will be available to answer questions about the school, located at 133 Brennan St. in Watsonville.

Deadline approaching for Bay Federal scholarships

CAPITOLA — Bay Federal Credit Union is accepting applications for its 2018 Education Scholarship contest through Friday.

Three winners will be chosen to receive $1,500 to pay for post-secondary education expenses at any accredited college, university, trade/technical school, or career education program.

High school seniors, current college undergraduate and graduate students, and adult re-entry students are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a Bay Federal savings account in good standing, and submit an application, supporting documents, proof of enrollment or a letter of acceptance for the school or program they plan to attend in the fall of 2018, and an original essay on how winning the scholarship would help them reach their education goals.

The application and complete scholarship rules are available at www.bayfed.com/scholarship and at all Bay Federal branches.

Over the years, Bay Federal has awarded 36 scholarships totaling $33,500 to promote education among the community and its membership.

Winners will be notified by March 6 and will be honored at Bay Federal’s annual meeting on March 27.
