Local arts organizations awarded grants

WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Film Festival and El Sistema Santa Cruz have been awarded grants from the California Arts Council.

The California Arts Council announced its plans to award $18,000 to the Watsonville Film Festival as part of its Cultural Pathways program.

The program provides two years of operating support and a host of technical assistance and professional development activities to small, new and emerging organizations rooted in communities of color, recent immigrant and refugee communities, and tribal or indigenous groups.

The Watsonville Film Festival started as a grassroots organization in 2012 founded by a group of Watsonville-based filmmakers. In addition to the annual festival, the organization hosts year-round screenings.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant from the California Arts Council,” said WFF Executive Director Consuelo Alba. “It will allow us to take our nonprofit organization to the next level and set a strong foundation to better serve our community in the years to come.”

The Watsonville Film Festival is one of 56 grantees chosen for the Cultural Pathways program. The award was featured as part of a larger announcement from the California Arts Council.

“California’s cultural diversity is its greatest creative asset,” said Nashormeh Lindo, California Arts Council chair. “We are proud to support the work of Watsonville Film Festival in celebration of that unique and cherished identity.”

In addition, the California Arts Council will award $17,100 to El Sistema Santa Cruz as part of its Arts Education: Extension program. The funds will be used to support after school and summer arts education at Radcliff and Mintie White elementary schools.

“El Sistema music program uses ensemble music to transform the lives of children by teaching the importance of teamwork, promoting self-confidence, and instilling the value of social responsibility,” said Pajaro Valley Unified School District Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez. “We are excited for the success of El Sistema during its first year at PVUSD and look forward to expansion efforts that would benefit our students.”
