Author to sign copies of new book

WATSONVILLE — A new mystery novel, “Pushing up Daisy,” will appear Saturday at Kelly’s Books, 1838 Main St. in Watsonville, from 1-3 p.m.

Local author Joyce Oroz will be signing copies of her newest book, the ninth in the popular Josephine Stuart Mystery Series,

The story is set in Ben Lomond, one of many California coastal towns Oroz writes about. The places are real, the characters and stories are fiction. 

Oroz uses her imagination to create pages full of tension and laugh-out-loud situations.

Breakfast with Santa returns

WATSONVILLE — Breakfast with Santa will be Dec. 10 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Watsonville Senior Center, 114 East Fifth St.

Community members are invited to visit and take a photo with Santa, eat breakfast, play holiday games, make a holiday gift and enjoy live music and dancing. Breakfast consists of pancakes, eggs, fruit, sausage and beverages.

All proceeds will benefit Watsonville youth recreation scholarships. Tickets are $5 children/seniors, $6 adults and under 2 are free with a paid adult meal. Printed photos with Santa are $5 each.

The event is presented by Recreation Advocates and Watsonville McDonald’s.

Climate change survey volunteers and donations needed

WATSONVILLE — Regeneración – Pájaro Valley Climate Action is recruiting bilingual (native Spanish-speaking/English) volunteers to conduct an in-depth community survey of 350 Pájaro Valley residents on Sunday, Dec. 10 with mandatory training at 10 a.m.

Additional volunteers are needed to prepare and distribute survey materials from Dec. 1-20.

The survey questions are designed to highlight whether, or how, people are being affected by the changing climate in terms of health, mobility, work and finances.

Regeneración is also inviting community members to contribute a gift of any size to support local high school and college students to step into leadership as they help conduct the survey. An $85 donation will cover the cost of interviewing one person.

Free composting class scheduled

SANTA CRUZ — A workshop on Tuesday will help gardeners learn the basics of composting fallen leaves.

The free workshop, led by UC Master Gardener and Master Composter Otis Johnson, will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. at Costanoa Commons Community Farm, 335 Golf Club Drive in Santa Cruz.

Attendees will learn how to successfully build and maintain a compost pile, including the do’s and don’ts of what to include. Building and maintaining worm bins (vermiculture) will also be covered.

The demonstration will be held outside, so attendees are advised to dress accordingly.
