WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville City Council approved a contract with a consultant Tuesday to plan for wastewater and sewer improvements over the next 20 years.
The contract with Carollo Engineers, Inc. is expected to not exceed $594,981, according to Public Works Director Steve Palmisano.
The Wastewater Master Plan will assess the current conditions of the wastewater treatment and sewer system facilities, and evaluate improvements needed to comply with new regulations, among other things.
“It will help us prepare for the future, and position us better for future federal or state funding,” said Mayor Lowell Hurst.
Councilwoman Nancy Bilicich expressed concern over the cost of the contract.
“It’s very important, but it’s still very expensive,” she said.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, Parks and Community Services Director Nick Calubaquib gave an update on the department’s strategic plan, currently being developed. The plan will guide services for the city’s 26 parks over the next five to 10 years.
“Post-recession, and after years of deferred maintenance, our team and our community are ready to move our parks and recreation system forward,” Calubaquib said.
