County observes MLK Day

A large bronze sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stands in the quad of Cabrillo College in Aptos.

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday that marks the birthday (Jan. 15, 1929) of the Nobel Peace Prize winner and champion for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The sculpture was created by Barrington McLean, the first Black faculty member at Cabrillo College who was an art instructor at Cabrillo from 1969-79. It was donated by the Ow family in 2003.
