SANTA CRUZ COUNTY—As students prepare to return to school on Jan. 4, districts across the county are offering families a tool to test their children for Covid-19 before they return.
While not required for return to class, the tests are “highly recommended,” Soquel Union Elementary School District Superintendent Scott Turnbull said.
The Santa Cruz County office of Education on Friday received hundreds of boxes of iHealth test kits, each of which contains two individual tests. These will be distributed at schools and sites and will be available for pickup beginning Sunday.
Dr. Faris Sabbah, superintendent of Santa Cruz County Schools, said 80,000 Covid-19 test kits arrived, enough for each student in the 100-plus schools in Santa Cruz County, to get two test kits each. That includes all 39 schools within the Pajaro Valley Unified School District.
These rapid tests take 15 minutes to administer, Turnbull said.
