County redistricting meeting set for Oct. 26 | News Briefs

Community members will have the chance to weigh in on how supervisorial districts will be redrawn, a process that determines what districts will look like for the next 10 years.

Every 10 years, local and federal governments redraw their districts according to Census data. Ideally, district lines will keep together communities that share similar characteristics, known as communities of interest. By doing this, districts will represent communities more accurately, by keeping together people with similar policy opinions and concerns.

The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors is considering two shifts to district boundaries. One would shift the Apple Hill neighborhood and Harkins Slough Road from District 2 to 4. The other would shift the neighborhood between the Small Craft Yacht Harbor, 7th Avenue and Brommer Street Extension from District 3 to 1.

To weigh in on these proposed changes, attend the special meeting on Oct. 26 at 6:30pm.

Attend in person at 701 Ocean St. in Santa Cruz. To attend virtually or learn more about upcoming meetings, visit santacruzcounty.us/Redistricting2021.aspx.

Food Bank readies for holiday rally

Join the Second Harvest Food Bank at its outdoor Rally for Hope to support families facing food insecurity.

Second Harvest Food Bank was the first food bank established in California. Every month, its network organizations and programs feed 75,000 people—but with the upcoming winter season comes higher utility bills and a greater reliance on its services.

That’s why the organization puts on an annual holiday rally, a three-month effort to raise funds and supplies for the food bank. Its goal this year is to provide 5 million meals to families across the county.

According to Second Harvest, Santa Cruz County families rely on its services 50% more than in other communities, due to the high cost of living in the county. The organization needs the support of community members to keep up with this higher demand.

The rally will feature guest speakers and a complimentary lunch for each guest. It will take place Nov. 4, from 11:45am to 12:45pm at Cabrillo College.
