WATSONVILLE — This past Presidents’ Day on Feb. 18, Juan and Paula Diaz had more reason to celebrate than just the national holiday.

The date also marked the 10th anniversary of their family restaurant, Cowboy’s Corner Cafe, located on Main Street in Watsonville.

“It crept up on us,” Paula Diaz said. “Time has gone by so fast. Suddenly we were looking at the calendar and realizing it had been 10 years.”

Since opening in February 2009, Cowboy’s Corner Cafe has attracted a loyal following of customers from Watsonville, the rest of Santa Cruz County and beyond. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, with everything from steak and eggs to fresh salads and sandwiches.

The owners said that the best part of their job is meeting new people and getting to know their regular customers — some who have been visiting the restaurant since it opened. Many return weekly, daily and even occasionally twice in one day.

“Our customers are amazing,” Diaz said. “We’ve met so many nice people. It’s been so fun to get to know them and learning about their lives.”

The staff at Cowboy’s Corner Cafe have also remained close over its 10 years. Two of the restaurant’s cooks, three waiters and one waitress have been employed for the entire run, and others for at least four or five years. The owners’ son and two daughters have also taken their turns working for the family business over the years.

To commemorate the cafe’s 10 years, the staff did what they do best: work hard for their customers.

“It was actually a really busy day,” Diaz recalls. “It was a good way to celebrate how far we’ve come.”

Perhaps it is that dedicated attitude that keeps customers coming back for more.

“We just really want to thank everyone who has supported us these past 10 years,” she said. “It’s been great, and we hope people continue to enjoy what we do here.”
