Thousands poured into the Watsonville Municipal Airport to kick off Fourth of July festivities with the third annual Fire in the Sky fireworks show on Wednesday night.

Moved up a day to help lighten the hefty workload on city employees and first responders on Fourth of July, the free event again packed the county’s lone airport with gobs of people looking to get a jump start on Independence Day celebrations.

Along with the booming firework finale, Fire in the Sky also featured multiple full service food trucks, informational booths and aircraft displays from the California Highway Patrol, Santa Cruz County Sheriffs’ office and Cal Fire — among other agencies.

“The Beast,” a jet-engine dragster, and multiple remote control aircrafts also put on displays for the crowds of blanket-covered people who were set up in chairs across the normally closed off airport runway.

A dedicated kid zone — a new addition this year — featuring a rock climbing wall, multiple jump houses and an art area was overflowing with kids.
