SANTA CRUZ — Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, the first all-female mariachi in the United States, will return to Santa Cruz for a special holiday performance on Sunday.
Formed in 1994 by mariachi maestro Jose Hernandez, Reyna de Los Angeles has taken the history of women in mariachi from solely being singers to being part of the full lineup of musical performers. The group has paved the way for many other all-female mariachi groups across the nation.
In a musical landscape where many mariachi songs are often written by men, about male perspectives, Reyna has created its own history. That history began with the mentorship of Lola Beltran, “La Reina de la Musica Ranchera,” and the success of Reyna de Los Angeles has propelled them to record multiple successful albums. The group has collaborated with artists such as Vivki Carr, Guadalupe Pineda, Migues Aceves Mejia and Lucha Villa.
On Sunday, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles will present “Navidad Mexicana,” a concert featuring a holiday-themed setlist. The show will be held at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz.
Tickets are $36.75 in advance and $45 at the door for general admission. Gold Circle tickets are available for $52.50 in advance and $60 at the door. A number of $10 youth tickets will also be available while supplies last.
