WATSONVILLE—Watsonville police have arrested five gang members believed to be responsible for two separate violent attacks that left several people injured, WPD spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said.
The first attack occurred on March 26 outside of a liquor store on the 1100 block of Freedom Boulevard. Lazaro Barajas, 22, Kevin Calderon, 22, Reybtzi Lopez, 25, and a 16-year-old attacked two men, Pulido said.
During the attack, Lopez attempted to strike one of the victims with a hammer, but the other one managed to block the strike, Pulido said. The suspects fled the area, leaving the victims with moderate injuries.
The second incident occurred on April 6 in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on the 1400 block of Freedom Boulevard. Barajas and a 14-year-old gang member attacked the victim, but bystanders intervened and helped as the suspects left the scene, Pulido said.
The suspects were identified after a thorough investigation, and all have been arrested. The 16-year-old suspect from the liquor store attack was already in custody for the attempted murder of another teen. WPD officers arrested Barajas, Calderon and the 14-year-old last week. Lopez turned himself Monday night.
Calderon was in custody at Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, jail records showed. Neither Lopez nor Barajas appeared to be in custody on Wednesday.
