WATSONVILLE — Ohlone Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day on Wednesday, an event that allowed each student to score a free book.
The official day is not until March 2, which is a celebration of the birthday of noted children’s book writer and illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
But that’s a short day for Pajaro Valley Unified School District, and the school wanted to give all its students a chance to participate.
“We just want our students to have access to a lot of books, and more importantly to love to read,” said Gretchen Giuffre, who coordinates the school’s after-school program.
For his book, Moctezuma Hernandez chose the children’s classic “The Little Prince,” which he said he has already read. He said he wanted to have his own copy because he likes the story.
Moctezuma called the event “amazing.”
“We get a book to read,” he explained.
Sponsored by the National Education Association, the nationwide event allows schools, libraries and community centers to promote a love of reading in young people.
