Aptos High’s trio of sophomores were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the Central Coast Section tennis tournament on Tuesday at Bay Club Courtside in Los Gatos.
Competing in singles, Mia Totah lost to top-seeded Ashley Yeah and the doubles team of Lila and Rebecca Sampson lost to No. 3 seed Stephanie Ren and Monica Stratakos of Saratoga High.
Totah, the back-to-back Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League singles champion, won her first match of the tournament over Salinas High’s Makayla Chassion in a 7-6, 6-4 decision but hit a wall in the quarterfinals against Yeah, who is ranked among the top 25 high school tennis players in the country.
She fell 6-0, 6-0 to the senior from Los Gatos High, which went on to win the championship for a second straight season on Wednesday afternoon over No. 3 seed Kate Duong of Cupertino High, 6-1, 7-5.
Still, it was an improvement for Totah, who last year drew No. 3-seeded Sarah Bahsoun of Los Gatos in the first round and fell, 6-0, 6-1.
The Sampson twins, meanwhile, won their first round matchup over Erin Cole and Kate Merri of Menlo-Atherton High, 6-1, 6-2, but could not best Saratoga’s combo in the quarterfinals. The back-to-back SCCAL doubles champions lost 6-0, 7-5 to the eventual finalists.
Ren and Stratakos fell in the final to Los Gatos’ top-seeded duo of Yana Gurevich and Bahsoun.
Totah and the Sampsons not only won the league’s individual titles but also helped Aptos win its second straight SCCAL team title and finish with a perfect 12-0 league record.
