WATSONVILLE — More than 100 friends, family, administrators and former player showed for Watsonville’s baseball field dedication to late coach Harlan Guy, Wednesday afternoon.
Guy, who died in 2015, was a baseball coach at Watsonville for close to 20 years before stepping down in 1980, and also became the school’s first Athletic Director in 1976.
Known for his hard-nosed, intense and straightforward methods as a coach and teacher at Watsonville, Guy helped produce several collegiate and pro baseball players, while also helping build the school’s athletic program as a whole.
Watsonville A.D. Marcus Northcutt, along with several others on hand, said the dedication was long overdue.
“It’s great to have it finally named and especially, from what I’m understanding, after someone who really represents what Watsonville is all about,” Northcutt said.
The school presented the Guy family with a sizable sign that will hang on the baseball concession stand facing Blackburn Street. It will be the first visible sign when entering the city from Highway 129.
“ He was very creative and extremely passionate,” said former Watsonville A.D. Brad Hubbard.
