All eyes will be on Marcos Reyes Friday night against Monte Vista Christian School, as Aptos High School’s senior running back has a chance to set his school’s record for rushing yards.
In last week’s game against Aragon High School of San Mateo, Reyes finished with 190 yards on 13 carries, and scored a touchdown.
He is now just nine yards away from Mike Allshouse’s record of 2,082 yards, which he set in the early ‘90s.
In last year’s meeting between the two teams, Aptos won 49-28, with Reyes rushing for 292 yards, which was his career high, according to stats kept by MBayPreps.com.
While Aptos (2-0) will be playing on their home turf for the first time this season, Monte Vista Christian will be gunning for its first win.
The Mustangs (0-2) lost to last year’s CCS D-IV champ Christopher High in its first game of the season on Aug. 24, and fell 37-14 to The King’s Academy of Sunnyvale on Aug. 31, a team ranked 432nd in the state, according to MaxPreps.com.
Monte Vista Christian, coached by Jubenal Rodriguez, is ranked 676 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com, while Aptos, coached by Randy Blankenship, is ranked 114th. The two teams will test their might one last time before league action starts on Sept. 21.
Here’s a look at the other local high school football games happening this week:
• Watsonville vs. St. Francis; Friday at 7:30 p.m.: The Watsonville High School Wildcatz are off to a strong start this season, defeating Pajaro Valley and Santa Cruz by 29 and 27 points, respectively.
They will face off against another hot team in the St. Francis High School Sharks, who last week held Pajaro Valley scoreless en route to a 41-0 victory, and emerged victorious in a 51-16 drubbing over Sobrato High on Aug. 24.
The Sharks (2-0), coached by John Ausman, are led by their senior quarterback Joseph Ramirez, who ran for 103 yards and scored two touchdowns in last week’s win. He also made two touchdown passes.
The two teams last met in 2011, when Watsonville walked away with a 29-12 win.
The Wildcatz (2-0), coached by Ron Myers, are coming off a 41-14 victory over historic rival Santa Cruz High.
• N.M.C. vs. Scotts Valley; Friday at 7:30 p.m.: The North Monterey County High School Condors will look to rebound after a tough 58-0 loss last week against Carmel High.
The Condors (1-1), coached by Sean Gomes, will have their home crowd behind them, as the team is currently in the second game of a five-game home stand.
Scotts Valley (1-1), coached by Louie Walters, is searching for answers after a 42-0 loss versus Eureka High School.
• Pajaro Valley at San Lorenzo Valley; Saturday at 2 p.m.: The Pajaro Valley High School Grizzlies will look for their first win in an afternoon game at San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton.
The Grizzlies (0-2), coached by Kevin Cordova, will also be looking for some offense, after scoring only one touchdown in the final play of the season-opening Belgard Kup game against Watsonville High, and being held scoreless versus St. Francis High last week.
S.L.V. is coming off a 35-0 win over Yerba Buena of San Jose. The Grizzlies will have their hands full with S.L.V.’s senior quarterback Stevie Markey, who threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns in that game.
