Watsonville sophomore Layla Ruiz reset her school record in the 3,200-meters while racing against some of the best high school distance runners in the state at the Stanford Invitational on March 29.
Ruiz placed seventh in 11 minutes, and 7.98 seconds to top her pervious program record of 11:09.40, which she set at last year’s Central Coast Section Championships in Gilroy.
Her time is the seventh-best mark in the CCS this spring, and the top time among the section’s sophomores.
Aptos stars Brynn Mitchell and Hunter Matys also earned top-10 finishes in their events at Stanford.
Mitchell, a junior, placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 7.5 inches, and took 10th in the long jump at 16-7.25.
A CCS finalist in both events last season, Mitchell holds the section’s third and fourth best marks in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
Matys, a senior, took sixth in the long jump with the seventh-best mark of the day, 21-3.25.
