The Cabrillo College Seahawks amassed 459 yards of offense but still dropped to 0-2 on the season following a 32-25 non-conference loss to Foothill College on Saturday in Los Altos.
Freshman quarterback Nick Martig got the start for injured freshman signal caller Evan Nelson and completed 28 of his 52 attempts for 316 yards and two scores but couldn’t complete Cabrillo’s late-game comeback. He was intercepted on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the game.
The Seahawks also hurt their cause by committing 23 penalties for 215 yards.
Martig connected with freshmen Jamarr Porter and Carl Pinegar on his two scores.
Freshman running back Terrence Smith ran 19 times for 146 yards and a score. His 61-yard touchdown run near the end of the first quarter tied the game up at 10-10.
Foothill (3-0) scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter but Martig’s 37-yard hookup with Porter during the waning moments of the first half made it a one-score game at the break.
Cabrillo’s normally stout defense allowed a 34-yard field goal in the third quarter and was burned on a 93-yard touchdown run just before the start of the final stanza.
That score turned out to be the difference.
Freshman defensive backs Shaq Floyd and Robert “Bam” Moore both caught an interception.
Freshman defensive lineman Cameron Moore had three tackles for loss and one sack.
Cabrillo will try to find the win column on Sept. 23 against San Jose City College back at Carl Conelly Stadium in Aptos.
