The Cabrillo College women’s basketball team swept the Shasta College Crossover tournament to close out its preseason schedule with a 9-3 record.
The defending Coast Conference South division champion Seahawks stomped the Lassen College Cougars, 81-58, on Dec. 28, and closed out the Shasta Knights (7-8) in the title game with a 65-56 victory the following day.
Sophomore guard Heleyna Hill, from San Jose, averaged 24.5 points, 5.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game over the weekend.
Freshman guard Michaela Thornton, an alumna of Soquel High, continued to establish herself as the Seahawks’ secondary scoring threat, dropping 14 points in each game. Thornton did most of her damage from beyond the 3-point line, shooting 5-of-10 over the two-game stretch.
“I don’t work on my 3-point shooting as much as I should,” Thornton said. “I just kind of went for it.”
Veronica Johnson, a freshman guard from Felton, averaged a double-double through the tournament, scoring 23 points and hauling down 20 rebounds. Against Lassen, Johnson had a season-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field to go along with 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
The women’s team tips off CC-South play next week in the Los Altos Hills when they take on Foothill College (3-11) at 5 p.m.

MEN’S JC BASKETBALL
• Cabrillo 60, Foothill 49 – The men’s basketball team overcame a five-point, first-half deficit on Dec. 29 in Los Altos to bring their win streak to eight games.
Four of five Seahawks’ (11-3) starters scored double digits. Sophomore forward Lenorris Mincey logged his third double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) in five games.
Davon Northcutt, a sophomore forward from Aptos, filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block.
Cabrillo faces its final preseason test when it hosts Allan Hancock College (13-2) in the Adobe Palace on Saturday.
