John Lubina Sr. was born September 9, 1924 in Superior, Wyoming and passed peacefully September 15, 2018.
His family of 9 migrated to Hibbing, MN where he grew up as a young boy. At the age of 19 he joined the United States Army, the Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron, to support WWII efforts. There he fought in the Battle of Rhineland and received a purple heart. He met his wife, Audrey Holm in 1950 and they traveled across the states and settled in Burlingame, CA and eventually Sunnyvale where they raised their 8 children. In 1985 they moved to Watsonville.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia Lubina and Victoria Keown, Marla Atwell and his son Vince Lillquist. He has 16 incredible grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife and 3 daughters, Roseanna Penrod, Marjie Anderson and Diane Bowling.
He was an avid music lover and played the organ well into his 90’s. Earlier in his life he played drums and the accordion. Spending time with his family and grandchildren is what he enjoyed the most. He also loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf.
The family is grateful to hospice for the incredible care and support they have provided.
Services honoring Mr. Lubina will be held at Benito & Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel (1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz) on Friday, September 28, 2018. Visitation will begin at 11:30am, with services beginning at 12:30pm. John will be laid to eternal rest with his beloved wife, Audrey at Holy Cross Cemetery (2271 7th Ave., Santa Cruz) at 2:00pm. A celebration of life will follow.
