Remembering Bill Bachan
To the Editor,
Bill Bachan recently passed away and I thought of his important contribution in establishing the Wayne Richards Scholarship Foundation. Mr. Bachan generously offered his services pro bono which allowed the Foundation Board to focus its energy on fundraising for scholarships. For the past 18 years, we have awarded scholarships totaling $49,000 to 78 deserving scholar athletes throughout Santa Cruz County.
The recipients, their families and Foundation Board have a special appreciation for Bill Bachan for his considerable abilities, great sense of community and strong desire to help others.

Another advantage of self-driving cars
To the Editor,
Many may not know this, but detecting a drunk driver behind the wheel of a vehicle with a self-driving feature is possible without incurring any cost, whether or not the self-driving feature is engaged. The driven car itself can detect erratic driving and easily has the capability to flag this condition. Warning alarms such as the vehicle horn can go off, safety flashers could be activated or whatever means necessary to bring attention to an erratic driver on the road. This would help to curtail drunk driving accidents. Like the seat belt, this should become a mandatory safety requirement in the future.
Also, turn signals can properly be activated under certain conditions.
