The Cabrillo College baseball team opened up the 2018 season with a 5-1 win on the road over Cypress College on Friday afternoon. The game was a battle of the No. 6 ranked team in Northern California and No. 3 ranked squad in Southern California.
Rex Gomez gave Cabrillo (1-0) a three-run lead in the fourth inning with a two-run single, and the Seahawks’ bullpen did the rest.
Colton Crabtree allowed three hits and no runs in 2 1-3 innings of relief, and Tyler Biersdorff finished off the final 1 2-3 innings by allowing no hits and striking out two.
Dylan Gordon picked up the win on the mound. He went five complete innings and allowed just five hits, an earned run and a walk, while striking out four.
Rob Carling was 2-for-4 and scored twice, while Easton Vidales doubled, scored and drove in a run for Cabrillo, which will play Cypress again today at 1:30 p.m.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
• MVC 2, North Salinas 1 – Caroline Sullivan and Emily Edgerle scored off assists from Alison Zulaica and Kailey Morrell to lead Monte Vista Christian to its third straight MBL-Pacific division win on Wednesday.
Syerra Montes made 11 saves for M.V.C. (7-3-3, 4-1-1), which travels to Seaside High on Wednesday night at 5:45 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL
• Aptos 58, SLV 48 – Rashaun Wooden had 19 points and five rebounds, Blake Welle added 18 points and Aptos High edged San Lorenzo Valley High on Wednesday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League action.
• St. Francis 67, Scotts Valley 57 (2OT) – It took two overtimes, but the St. Francis High Sharks did manage to win their sixth straight game on Wednesday night in SCCAL action behind Chase Watkins 33 points and 12 rebounds.
Jason Gallo added 20 points and 15 rebounds, Andrew Seymour chimed in with 10 points and E.J. Kelly dished eight assists for St. Francis, which was playing in the Pat Summit Games at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz.

WOMEN’S JC BASKETBALL
• Cabrillo 85, Mission 69 – Pauli Pappas had 30 points, seven rebounds and seven assists to power Cabrillo College past Mission College on Wednesday night to take over first place in the Coast Conference South division.
Grace Giguiere scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Lauren Lacy finished with 10 points, eight assists and four steals.

• Cabrillo 91, West Valley 40 – Linton Acliese (21), Lenorris Mincey (14), Kobe Ordonio (13), Tynan Velasquez (11) and Tanner Spence (10) all scored in double figures in Cabrillo College’s CC-South division win on Wednesday night.

• Pajaro Valley 58, Monterey 39 – The Pajaro Valley High Grizzlies secured their first Monterey Bay League Pacific division win of the season on Thursday night.
Pajaro Valley (7-11, 1-6) returns to league action on Tuesday at Watsonville High at 7 p.m.
• St. Francis 57, Scotts Valley 50 – Janiya Sevilla poured in 20 points, Chloe Deleissegues had 18 points, nine rebounds and five steals and St. Francis edged Scotts Valley High on Wednesday night in SCCAL play.
Janessa Yniguez added 12 points and three assists.
• Aptos 74, SLV 45 – Natalia Ackerman recorded 28 points and seven rebounds, Hannah Hocom swished four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in Aptos High’s blowout SCCAL victory on Wednesday night.
• Ceiba 35, Kirby 21 – Fenesia Braga scored nine points in Ceiba College Prep’s Coastal Athletic League win over Kirby on Wednesday night.
Yvonne Carrisales added seven points.
