Watsonville High’s Abel Pena and Monte Vista Christian’s Christian Cabaug were given the No. 2 seed in their respective weight classes for the upcoming Central Coast Section Wrestling Championships.
The CCS Championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Independence High in San Jose.
Wrestling begins on Friday at 10 a.m. and picks back up on Saturday morning at the same time.
Championship matches are set for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Pena, a senior, is the defending CCS champ at 120 pounds, but was seeded second behind Gilroy High’s Nick Aguilar, whom beat Pena just two weeks ago for the Monterey Bay League championship at the same weight.
Aguilar, ranked No. 1 in the state at 120 pounds, last year won his third straight CCS crown while wrestling at 113 pounds, and also took second at the California Interscholastic Federation state meet for the second consecutive season.
Cabaug, a freshman, is two weeks removed from stunning the top two seeds at the MBL Finals to win the league championship at 113 pounds.
Because of those wins over Gilroy’s Nathan Aguilar and San Benito High’s Joe Delgado, Cabaug moved ahead of them in the seeding.
Silver Creek High senior Eric Sanchez, a CCS runner-up at 106 pounds last season, is the No. 1 seed.
Three other local wrestlers earned a seed.
M.V.C.’s Mateo Montoya (120 pounds) and Amman Klair (138) earned the No. 4 seed in their respective weight classes, as well as Aptos High’s Keegan Dutton-Jones (182), who last week repeated as a Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion.
