Watsonville High alumnus Chris Rivera recorded the first save of his professional career on Wednesday, tossing two strong innings in the GCL Cardinals’ 4-2 win over the GCL Mets.
Rivera, a former Long Beach State Dirtbag, allowed a hit and an earned run to lower his earned run average to 4.19 for the season.
He has made nine appearances since being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft earlier this year. He has a 2-1 record.

• S.C. Red season ends – The Santa Cruz Red baseball team was eliminated from the Colt West Zone tournament at PAL Stadium in San Jose on Saturday.
Red lost 9-3 to Southern California’s Covina Blue in an elimination game a day after suffering its first loss of the tournament, a 5-4 heartbreaker against Campbell.
Red finished the tournament 1-2. Its only win of the tournament was a 3-2 victory over the San Jose PAL Blue on July 26. Nathaniel Brouse was 2-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases and a scored run. Dylan Vargas also had a good tournament, finishing 5-for-8 with two doubles and three RBIs.
