A powerful explosion and fire tore through a two-story apartment building in Capitola Village early Christmas morning. No injuries were reported in the 5:10am incident on the 100 block of Lawn Way.
Capitola Police and Central Fire responded to reports of a structure fire and possible gas explosion and quickly arrived and evacuated nearby residents. They also learned the residents of the burning unit were out of town.
PG&E spokeswoman Andria Borba said the fire, which remains under investigation, is not believed to be suspicious in nature. No injuries were reported.
Three residents were displaced and have been assisted by the Red Cross in finding shelter.
Officials said the structural integrity of the building has been compromised, requiring a safety zone around the building to protect the public. An area around the burned unit has been fenced off.
