WATSONVILLE — A major standoff closed part of Main Street in Watsonville in front of McDonald’s for almost three hours Saturday.

At around 11:45 a.m. a man arrived at the Overlook shopping center, acting paranoid and yelling, said Sgt. Mike Ridgway of the Watsonville Police Department.

After evading police, the man returned, parking on Main Street and then thrashing his SUV and its contents. He then climbed on top of his SUV’s roof and began yelling again, Ridgway said.

Sheriff Deputies were at the scene aiding WPD during the standoff. Officers surrounded the vehicle with flat-bed pickup trucks to alleviate the impact if the man happened to fall from the roof.

Main Street southbound at Ohlone Parkway was shut down for nearly three hours. By 3 p.m., the man’s sister had arrived on scene and was able to talk him down, Ridgway said.

No injuries were reported.
