WATSONVILLE—Watsonville Police on Oct. 4 arrested a man who allegedly placed skimming devices on credit card readers inside convenience stores in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.

George Cristea, 34, is facing several charges following an investigation involving several law enforcement agencies.

The case began in Salinas, where officers were investigating Cristea for allegedly placing skimming devices in at least two convenience stores. Salinas Police also learned that Cristea was driving a stolen car out of Southern California.

WPD’s Special Investigations Unit joined the investigation when Cristea drove to Watsonville in the stolen car, the department stated in a Facebook post. Officers found him at a convenience store on Airport Boulevard, just moments after he placed a skimming device on a credit card reader, police said.

Cristea was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of possession of a stolen car and possession and use of a credit card skimmer inside a business.
