A man died Thursday in an industrial accident at Monterey Mushrooms in Royal Oaks. — contributed

ROYAL OAKS—A 63-year-old man died Thursday after he reportedly fell into a machine at Monterey Mushrooms on Maher Road in Royal Oaks, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, is investigating the industrial accident. They said Jose Fierro was killed while working inside a hopper. OSHA said it will look into the cause and workplace safety standards.

“We are saddened by the loss of a Monterey Mushrooms team member at our Royal Oaks farm yesterday,” said Bruce Knobeloch, Vice President of Marketing at Monterey Mushrooms said. “We are working closely with state and local authorities in the ongoing investigation of this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and the entire Monterey Mushrooms family.” 

KION TV reported that the death was the third in less than three years at Monterey Mushrooms facilities around the state.

Monterey Mushrooms is the largest mushroom grower in the world and has its headquarters in Watsonville.
