SANTA CRUZ — One man was killed on Highway 17 Thursday when a falling tree struck his vehicle, California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said.

The driver, 85, suffered major injuries. The 84-year-old passenger was taken to a trauma center with major injuries, where he later died.

According to Courtney, the driver, an Aptos resident, was traveling north on Highway 17 at about 3:30 p.m. when a tree loosened by a rainstorm fell. A total of 10 vehicles were involved in the resulting collision.

The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner has not released the name of the victim.
