A man was swept from the rocky shoreline at Soberanes Point at Garrapata State Park Saturday and is reportedly still missing.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said two women and one man were swept to the sea by a huge wave around 3pm Saturday. While the two women managed to swing to shore, the man disappeared. The women were taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.
A large-scale multi-agency response was launched, including California State Parks, CalFire, CHP, Monterey County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.
At around 4:24pm, a US Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted what appeared to be a body in the ocean, the Sheriff’s Office said, but due to the high surf, lost visual contact and were unable to relocate the body.
The man is described as being about 30 years old, wearing a white turban, black shirt, black shorts and a black colored vest-style jacket.
Search and recovery efforts resumed Sunday.
The incident comes a week after a 39-year-old father and his 7-year-old daughter, visiting from Alberta, Canada, died at the same spot after being swept into the ocean by 15-to-20-foot waves.
