WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was shot and killed Saturday night in what a witness described as a gun battle in an otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Watsonville Police Sgt. Mish Radich said neighbors reported hearing gunfire around 8 p.m. on the 100 block of Lawrence Avenue near Green Valley Road.

Police found one man down in the driveway of a home. Though CPR was administered, he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

As an investigation unfolded numerous crime scene tags could be seen on the street where bullet shell casings landed. A large amount of what appeared to be marijuana buds and various containers were strewn across the street a few yards from where the victim ended up, who was covered by a tarp.

One witness reported a K-9 tackling a possible suspect a short while after the shooting at the athletic field of nearby Rolling Hills Middle School. A swarm of police canvassed that scene and set up a crime perimeter.

Three men are in custody.

As of 9:30 p.m. police continued to block off Lawrence Avenue. The investigation is ongoing.
