A man described by police as a person of interest in a shooting that left nine people hurt in San Francisco June 9 was arrested in Santa Cruz Wednesday evening following a high-speed chase that started in Watsonville.

Javier Campos, 22, was taken into custody after the California Highway Patrol deployed a spike strip at Highway 1 at Morrissey Boulevard during the pursuit.

San Francisco Police said that on June 9, police responded to 24th and Treat streets for a report of a shooting. Officers located eight men and one woman, ages 19-35, suffering from gunshot wounds.

All victims are expected to survive. 

SFPD believes the suspect is a member of a street gang. They also tied him to a Mercedes sedan recorded on surveillance video speeding from the scene of the shooting.

On Wednesday evening, members of the Santa Cruz County Anti Crime Team spotted Campos driving on Main Street in Watsonville where they tried to pull him over, said commander Ed Delfin.

During the pursuit, Campos was seen hurling an ammunition clip from his car near the northbound Mar Monte exit from Highway 1, which police recovered.

“The San Francisco Police Department was part of a multi-jurisdictional effort that took Javier Campos into custody,” San Francisco Police Officer Niccole Pacchettim said Thursday. 

Campos had several outstanding warrants for his arrest from multiple Bay Area agencies, according to Pacchettim. No arrests have been made in connection to the June 9 shooting, which remains an open and active investigation.
