Watsonville High’s Daniela Salazar and Layla Ruiz cruised into the Central Coast Section Semifinals in multiple events at Friday night’s Monterey Bay League Masters Meet in Gilroy.
Salazar, a senior, took first in the 800-meters with a time of 2 minutes, 19.99 seconds, and Ruiz, a freshman, placed first in the 3,200 in 11:45.66.
Salazar and Ruiz also helped the Wildcatz’s 4×400 relay advance to CCS. Freshman Carolina Avalos and Alexandra Corona also ran a leg for Watsonville’s fifth-place finishing relay (4:17.31).
Ruiz also took second in the 1,600 (5:18.81) to join several other locals at the section meet back in Gilroy on May 19.
Watsonville also had senior Jackie Barocio advance in the triple jump (5th, 32 feet, 1 3/4 inches), and senior Rolando Llamas advance in the discus (4th, 126-4).
Pajaro Valley High sophomore Katelyn Strader advanced in the high jump (3rd, 4-8).
Monte Vista Christian freshman Andrew Bachman qualified in the 800 (5th, 2:01.91). Mustangs’ senior Abby Lynch hit a personal record of 4-10 in the high jump to place second and advance. M.V.C. sophomore Delaney Ezeji-Okoye was first in the pole vault (10-0).
Advancing for North Monterey County High: junior Fernandez Perez (300 hurdles, 4th, 43.14), senior Victor Martinez (shot put, 2nd, 46-1.25), senior Guy Gida (shot put, 5th, 44-9), junior Konan Van Lear (discus, 5th, 124-7), senior Cameron Reyes (triple jump, 3rd, 40-10.5), sophomore Evelyn Orozco (400, 3rd, 1:02.48), senior Sarah Delgado (800, 2nd, 2:24.19), junior Faith Mora (3,200, 4th, 12:07.32), senior Jocelyn Cazarez (shot put, 2nd, 35-11; discus, 2nd, 115-8) and senior Alexus Espino (high jump, 4th, 4-6).
