WATSONVILLE — The Pajaro Valley Historical Association took a large crowd back to World War II during its Annual Vintage Picnic on Saturday.
The event included displays of preserved military uniforms, as well as formal and casual women’s dresses, hats and accessories of the era.
Watsonville native Wally Roberts, a World War II B-24 pilot who flew over Europe, spoke on his experiences from serving in the war, and Marvin Del Chiaro addressed the war’s impact on the West Coast.
Judy Doering-Nielsen, president of the PVHA board, noted the event had an “amazing” turnout and thanked those in attendance, including PVHA volunteers and the guest speakers.
“It’s not often we can have someone here to speak about World War II,” she said. “It’s such an honor to have them here with us.”
Leon Mattingley of Watsonville attended the event with family and friends, and said he always tries to support the work of PVHA.
“We really enjoy coming to these functions,” he said. “They’ve done a fantastic job with the exhibits.”
The Vintage Picnic was also a time to recognize the winners of the Young Historian Awards. The award is given to an individual or group between the ages of 16 and 25 who have worked to enhance the history of the Pajaro Valley.
Honored Saturday were Chloe Deleissegues, Jailene Lazaro, Germain Medina Jr., Stephanie Chavez and Chantal Nieto.
Monterey Bay Caterers served lunch to more than 100 people during the gathering held at the Bockius-Orr House on East Beach Street.
