WATSONVILLE—After a series of atmospheric river storms caused flooding that displaced hundreds from their homes, Second Harvest Food Bank saw an increased need, and put out a call for assistance.

And the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints answered that call, bringing two large emergency shipments—a total of 48 pallets that included white rice, spaghetti, jam and peanut butter.

“We thank the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for supplying food staples for many families affected by the flooding,” Second Harvest CEO Erica Padilla-Chavez said. “These donated items will help us support impacted families while ensuring that we continue to provide healthy meals for our neighbors in need.”

A second shipment in two semi-trailers is planned for March, which is expected to include dairy products and household goods.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has 2,400 members attending seven local congregations in Santa Cruz County. Worldwide, the Church has over 16 million members that meet in over 30,000 congregations around the globe.
