A man died Saturday afternoon in Watsonville when the motorcycle he was riding plowed into an SUV on Bridge Street.
Watsonville Police Sgt. Burt Iles said the man, who has not been identified, was traveling east on a Ducati motorcycle on Bridge Street at 2:25pm when he entered the intersection at Hushbeck Avenue, which is controlled by four-way stop signs. There, he struck a Subaru Outback that was pulling away from a stop sign at northbound Hushbeck Avenue.Â
The impact caved in the driver’s door and front end of the Subaru and smashed the front windshield, trapping the elderly male driver.
The motorcyclist, who landed in the center of the intersection, was pronounced dead at the scene, Iles said.
Iles said it was too early to say if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The victim was wearing a helmet.
After firefighters pried open the door of the Subaru, the driver was taken by American Medical Response paramedics to an unnamed hospital.
Watsonville Police shut down the heavily traveled intersection, near the entrance to Bay Village—a senior housing area—for around three hours to complete their investigation. The streets are posted at 25mph.
The incident is still under investigation.
