WATSONVILLE—Monte Vista Christian junior goalkeeper Alexa Malespina was named the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division’s Defensive Player of the Year for her stellar performance in front of the net this season.

According to the Monterey Bay Preps website, she recorded 76 saves and two shutouts for MVC, which finished with a 5-10-4 overall record and placed fifth in the Mission Division with a 4-6-2 record in league play. 

Malespina also earned all-league first team honors along with fellow freshman teammate Ashley Drago, who finished with three goals according to MBayPreps.

Pajaro Valley sophomore Valeria Acosta and senior Kalra Leyva earned All-PCAL Mission Division First team honors.

Acosta finished with a team-best 15 goals and a pair of assists, while Leyva played a key role in the defensive midfield for the Grizzlies (9-9-2, 5-6-1), who placed fourth in the Mission Division standings.

Jocelyn Llamas, a senior, and sophomore Leslie Carrisoza both earned all-league second team honors. Carrisoza finished with 11 goals and a pair of assists for Pajaro Valley.

Watsonville High senior Kiana Arela earned All-PCAL Gabilan Division First Team honors, while fellow teammate freshman Jasleen Hererra earned all-league second team honors.

St. Francis High’s Olivia Chavez-Arce, Alondra Martinez and Emma Pettersen earned All-PCAL Cypress Division First Team honors.

Fellow teammates Samantha Martinez, Monserrat Ramirez and Miriam Abonce–who finished with a team-best 14 goals–earned all-league second team honors.

Ceiba College Prep junior Janelle Quinero earned All-PCAL Santa Lucia Division First Team honors, while fellow junior teammate Delia Arana earned all-league second team honors.
