Monte Vista Christian's Nico Downie runs for a gain after a catch against Scotts Valley during the team's PCAL Mission North Division football game in Watsonville on Friday, Oct 11. (Raul Ebio/The Pajaronian)

Monte Vista Christian senior Nico Downie was like a lightning bolt on the football field during the 2024 fall season, using his blazing speed to zip past defenders and into the end zone.

The Mustangs’ star receiver led the Pacific Coast Athletic League with 1,619 receiving yards (fifth best in the nation) and 14 touchdowns on 87 receptions, according to statistics on the Max Preps website.

Two of those categories—receiving yards and receptions—were also good for best and second best, respectively, in California.

In 30 career games, Downie tallied 193 receptions for 3,332 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns. All three categories are Santa Cruz County records, while the receptions and receiving yards are Tri-County (Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito) records.
