WATSONVILLE — Watsonville will get a new, but familiar, face as its next mayor Tuesday.

Lowell Hurst will be sworn in as mayor for the third time in the city’s history, and Jimmy Dutra will become vice mayor.

Hurst was first elected to the city council in 1989, serving two terms through 1998, and was mayor in 1994. Hurst was reappointed to the council in 2011, and was re-elected in 2012 and 2014, running unopposed both times. He served again as mayor in 2013.

He taught in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District for more than 32 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Purdue University and a master’s in administrative leadership from the University of San Francisco.

Dutra was elected to the city council in 2014.  Born and raised in Watsonville, he attended Salesian Elementary School, E.A. Hall Middle School and graduated from Watsonville High School in 1993. He earned a political science degree from Santa Clara University.

Oscar Rios has served as mayor for the past year.
