WATSONVILLE — Pajaro Valley Unified School District’s Board of Trustees will face a full agenda Wednesday, immediately after three new members take their seat for the first time since being elected in November.
A Santa Cruz County Superior Court Judge will swear in Daniel Dodge Jr., Jennifer Holm and Jennifer Schacher during the annual organizational meeting at 6 p.m., one hour earlier than the board meeting normally convenes. The board will then select a president and a vice president.
The organizational meeting is traditionally highlighted with performances of Christmas songs by student musicians from several different schools, and by recognitions of students of the year.
The newly seated board will then hear the first interim budget report, which is a look at the district’s financial state for the period ending Oct. 31. The second interim report is due March 17 for the period ending Jan. 31.
These reports are a look at a school district’s ability to meet its financial obligations over the current year, and the subsequent two years.
Chief Financial Officer Joe Dominguez has recommended a positive certification, meaning that the district has the ability to meet its financial obligations for the 2018-19 school year, and the following two years.
The first interim report also shows changes from the unaudited actuals budget report from September.
According to the report, PVUSD will end this year with a $28.9 million balance, a number that drops to $20.3 million at the end of the 2019-20 school year and to $14.1 million the following year.
The trustees will also hear the first reading of two policies that cover how the district handles immigration issues.
If adopted at a later meeting, the new policies reflect changes required by Senate Bill 31, which prohibits districts from compiling a list based on students’ national origin. The district is also looking to change its policies based on Assembly Bill 699, which prohibits districts from sharing student information to federal immigration authorities without a judicial subpoena.
Both laws took effect this year.
