WATSONVILLE — Police officers from Watsonville and Santa Cruz raided a residence on Clifford Avenue Friday morning during a search for stolen guns, Watsonville Police Sgt. Mish Radich said.
According to Radich, the heavily armed and armored Special Response Unit was serving a high-risk search warrant at 191 Clifford Ave. at about 8:30 a.m., looking for firearms that related to a burglary.
Radich declined to specify where or when that burglary was.
It is unclear who lives at the address, but the police were heard calling for Erik Hurtado to come out with his hands up. Radich said Hurtado was named in the search warrant.
The team found no weapons during the search. Hurtado was not at the residence, Radich said.
H.A. Hyde and Starlight elementary schools and Cesar Chavez Middle School were locked down during the incident. Police closed Clifford Avenue between Melrose Avenue and Claremont Street.
According to Radich, police in Watsonville have taken almost 200 guns off the streets since the beginning of the year.
“There are a lot of guns out there, unfortunately,” he said.
