For more than 50 years, our community has demonstrated what’s possible when neighbors care for one another.
Through floods, emergencies, economic downturns and a global pandemic, our Santa Cruz County neighbors have consistently shown up to ensure that no one faces hunger alone.
Today, we are honored to share the next chapter of our food bank, one shaped by deep listening, honest reflection, and a clear understanding of what our community needs now and in the years ahead. Our newly unveiled five-year Strategic Plan (2026–2031) is guided by a simple but powerful mantra: Nourishing Today, Building Tomorrow. It reflects the dual responsibility we carry, meeting the immediate need for food while also investing in a stronger, more resilient future for our neighbors. Across the country, food banks are navigating a rapidly changing landscape.
Rising food costs, increasing demand, climate-driven emergencies, and unpredictable funding have made one thing clear: feeding our community tomorrow requires more than goodwill alone. It requires strong infrastructure, which includes reliable facilities, diversified funding, resilient supply chains and systems that can respond quickly when crisis strikes.
That is why a core focus of our strategic plan is strengthening the foundation of our organization. By investing now in our infrastructure, systems, and people, we are better preparing Second Harvest to weather disruptions and continue serving our community, no matter what lies ahead. But our vision goes beyond food. Over the past year, we embarked on a community-wide listening tour, hearing directly from participants, volunteers, partners, funders, and staff. One message came through clearly: hunger is not a personal failure. It is a systemic challenge.
And while food is essential, it is only one piece of what families need to truly thrive. Our strategic plan reflects this reality. Along with providing nutritious, culturally relevant food with dignity and respect, we are forging stronger relationships with our partner agencies to connect people to a wide range of supportive services.
Through these partnerships, we help neighbors access resources that support emotional and physical well-being-because true food security isn’t just about food. It’s about health, stability, and opportunity. We are also strengthening our role as an advocate, lifting up the voices of those most impacted by hunger, championing nourishment programs, and working alongside local, state, and federal partners to address the root causes that keep families food insecure in one of the most expensive regions in the country.
In short, we are building a food bank that does more than respond to hunger. We are helping shape a future where fewer families experience it in the first place. None of this work happens without you. The generosity of this community, our donors, volunteers, partner agencies, advocates, and participants, has always been the driving force behind Second Harvest. This strategic plan is not something we will carry forward alone. It is an invitation. An invitation to stay informed as we share progress and challenges. An invitation to engage more deeply through volunteering, advocacy, and partnership. And an invitation to see yourself as part of the food bank.
Because together, WE are the food bank. We invite you to read our full 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, available on our website, to learn more about the priorities guiding this next chapter and how you can be involved. As we nourish today and build tomorrow, we do so with deep gratitude for the trust you place in us, and with confidence in what we can accomplish side by side. With your continued support, Santa Cruz County can be a place where everyone has access to nutritious food, essential services, and the opportunity to thrive.
