Man fatally struck by car following crash in Prunedale

PRUNEDALE—A man died following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 101 at Prunedale South Road early on July 16.

Cmdr. Derrel Simpson of the Monterey County Sheriff/Coroner’s Office identified Daniel Lewis Castaneda, 29, of San Jose as the victim. Simpson added that Castaneda was a correctional officer at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad.

At 5:32am a Toyota sedan collided with a Honda sedan just north of Highway 156, California Highway Patrol officer Jessica Madueño said.

After the crash Castaneda exited his vehicle, Madueño said, and was struck by a passing car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Madueño said the CHP advises anyone in a crash on the highway to stay in their vehicle with their seatbelt on, to call 911 and wait for help.
