PAJARO — A small park in Pajaro that was shuttered two years has been given new life, thanks to work by Monterey County and Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District.
Once known as the Tot Lot, Cayetano Park will officially open on Friday.
Cayetano Park is the second phase of a plan to bring family-friendly outdoor spaces to the Pajaro area, said Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District General Manager Don Rosa.
The first was Pajaro Park, which boasts a large playground in addition to a soccer field.
But the giant park is always bustling with children and adults, and can be intimidating for those who want to bring their toddler for quiet playtime. Cayetano Park, known as a “pocket park,” is smaller and more intimate, Rosa said.
The park has a new play structure and swings, and workers will soon install picnic tables.
“It gives the grandparent or babysitter a place to go and spend time with kids without the hustle and bustle,” he said.
Built in 1991, the aging, dilapidated park was shuttered in 2016 because of safety hazards.
While Monterey County owns Cayetano Park, Pajaro/Sunny Mesa Community Services District will maintain it.

The public is invited to the grand opening of Cayetano Park at the corner of Cayetano and Florence streets in Pajaro at 4 p.m. on Friday.
