A  73-year-old Santa Cruz man was struck by a car and killed early Friday morning on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz.

The California Highway Patrol said the man, for unknown reasons, was walking on southbound Hwy 1, north of Soquel Avenue around 5am.

CHP officers responded to a crash and learned a 44-year-old woman from Santa Cruz was driving a gray 2013 Toyota Camry southbound on Hwy 1. 

The Toyota struck the man, who suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel despite life-saving efforts.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash. 

The man’s name was not released.
