Watsonville Firefighter John Stone (left) joins other emergency workers in dealing with one of two crashes on northbound Highway 1 in Watsonville on Jan. 14. California Highway Patrol officer Stephen Busath said the female driver of a box delivery truck plowed into the rear of a utility van just after 11am. The van then smashed into a pickup truck that was shoved into a trailer that was being towed by another pickup. Busath said traffic has stopped for another two-vehicle crash between two pickups just minutes before on the same stretch of highway that crosses over Struve Slough. The driver of the box truck was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, Busath said. Emergency officials closed one lane of Highway 1 for about 90 minutes to allow for the investigation to unfold and for mop-up. The incident is still under investigation.
