Live music and folkloric dance performances unfolded in Watsonville Plaza Friday evening thanks to the Watsonville Film Festival and Cabrillo College’s Hispanic Serving Institution Week. Mexican Fiesta was a two-hour free family event that featured Mariachi Juvenil Corazón Jaliscience from Hollister and Laura Rebolloso, singer, dancer, poet and co-founder of Son Jarocho band of Veracruz, Son de Madera. Also on stage were dancers from Watsonville’s Esperanza del Valle.
Uziel Payan, a band from Tijuana, Mexico, performs Sunday on a closed-off Main Street during a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. Put on by Fiestas Patrias for the 33rd year, the celebration featured numerous bands, food, information tables and folkloric dance performances. Oscar Rios of Fiestas Patrias and founder of the event said the day not only marked Mexico’s historic independence from Spain, but also was a way of “honoring our planet.” He added, “We want to raise our consciousness about the health of our planet and that starts with each one of us.” Photo: Tarmo Hannula/The Pajaronian
