Pregnant woman ID’d in fatal crash

WATSONVILLE—A 33-year-old pregnant woman died Thursday night as she walked across South Green Valley Road and was struck by a car.

She has been identified as Marlyn Uribe of Watsonville by the Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office.

Watsonville Police said that, according to witnesses, Uribe was crossing four lanes of traffic on South Green Valley Road with a man when a white BMW struck her. The impact then caused the BMW to crash into a Ford SUV head-on.

Sgt. Mike Ridgway said Uribe was crossing four lanes of South Green Valley Road in a dark section of the heavily traveled road just before 8:30pm. She and the man were walking from the south side of the road toward the north (the Home Depot store) when the BMW, traveling westbound on South Green Valley Road, struck Uribe between Loma Prieta and Carey avenues.

Watsonville Police do not suspect the 20-year-old driver of the BMW was speeding or was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Ridgway said the male friend made it to the other side safely.

“Street racing does not appear to be a component in the crash,” Ridgway said.

The driver and two passengers in the BMW were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. The driver and passenger of the Ford suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene.

There is a marked crosswalk at Carey Avenue and an electrical assisted crosswalk close to the crash scene near the Home Depot store.

“Taking the extra few minutes to use either crosswalk would have simply eliminated this incident,” Ridgway said.

WPD’s Traffic Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Ridgway at 889.8422.
